Co-Ops vs. Gentrification in the Neighborhood

Thanks to the reader who sent along this interesting episode of the Laura Flanders Show, which explores how Bed Stuy residents are using co-ops, or thinking about forming them, in the hopes of benefiting the community and preventing displacement caused by gentrification. The initiative is being spearheaded by NEBHDCO, a non-profit that works in the neighborhood concerning issues of affordable housing as well as community and economic development initiatives. NEBHDCO has found there’s a desire from residents to take advantage of the co-op model, as well as funding coming from city government. And as one advocate says in the video, “Bed Stuy has all the ingredients to make a vibrant community of cooperatives.” Worth a watch!
