Just because the weather’s getting cold and farmer’s markets are disappearing doesn’t mean you can’t get great, fresh veggies in the neighborhood. This winter, the Garden of Eve Organic Farm, based in Long Island, is launching a CSA that can be picked up Saturdays at Grandchamps restaurant, 197 Patchen Avenue. The farm’s winter share is a pre-boxed, once-a-month pickup from December through May that holds around 15-20 pounds of organic vegetables and one to three dozen eggs. The cost is $55 a box and you can sign up here.
And for the first time, the GrowNYC Fresh Food Box Program (which ran out of the Halsey Street Garden this summer) is continuing year-round. The pickup has moved to Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, 228 Decatur Street, between 4:30 and 7pm every Tuesday of the week. Boxes cost $12, and you only have to sign up a week ahead of time for next week’s pickup. Above, some veggies that I’ve recently got through Food Box. Every week your share comes with a list of recipes and the farms that everything comes from.
Now there are no excuses not to eat your veggies this winter!
